12 Holiday Decor Storage Tips & Solutions for Homeowners

Published On: January 31, 2023By

Christmas decorations, Easter bunnies, and Halloween pumpkins! For most homeowners, these items have a special place in their hearts—but not necessarily in their homes. If you’re struggling to find a place to store holiday decorations between seasons, we’ve gathered some of the best storage solutions and tips for your home.

1.) Use Your Closet Space Wisely

Closets are usually our go-to spot to store holiday décor. The trick is to stay organized. Invest in some sturdy storage bins and label them accordingly so you know exactly what’s inside each bin without having to open it first. Stack the bins neatly in your closet, so they don’t take up too much space but are still easily accessible when you need them.

2.) Get Creative with Your Attic Space

Most attics are rarely used beyond storing old clothes and furniture—but why not turn yours into an organized place for storing holiday decorations? All it takes is a little bit of planning ahead (and maybe some extra shelving). Arrange your decorations into different categories (Christmas, Easter, etc.), designate one shelf for each category, and then store them accordingly. This system will save you time when it comes time to decorate for the holidays again next year—no more digging through boxes or trying to remember where you stored everything!

3.) Label everything

Use a permanent marker to label storage boxes, bins, and bags with the contents. This will save you time and frustration when you’re trying to find holiday decorations next year.

4.) Store away from heat and sunlight

Heat and sunlight can damage or fade holiday decorations, so it’s important to store them in a cool, dark place. A basement, closet or attic is ideal. This is especially important for photos when storing holiday decorations. In fact, consider having important holiday photos framed in UV-resistant glass.

5.) Keep fragile items safe

Wrap fragile items such as glass ornaments in bubble wrap or tissue paper before placing them in storage. This will help prevent them from breaking.

6.) Use storage bags

Storage bags are a great way to keep holiday decorations organized and dust-free. Be sure to label the bags so you know what’s inside.

7.) Use storage boxes

Storage boxes are perfect for larger items such as wreaths and garlands. When you store holiday décor, be sure to label the boxes so you know what’s inside. You don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy boxes. Head to the dollar store on boxing day and scoop up holiday-themed boxes for your holiday décor!

8.) Hang items up

If possible, hang items such as stockings and garlands on hooks or hangers instead of storing them in boxes or bags. This will help to prevent them from becoming wrinkled or damaged. Taking advantage of vertical space is important for maximizing space when storing holiday décor.

9.) Take inventory

Before storing holiday decorations, take inventory of what you have so you can make a list of what needs to be replaced next year. This will save you time and money when it’s time to decorate again. Keep the list in a binder and keep the binder somewhere it won’t get lost. This is also a way to document any heirloom holiday décor items that have come your way over the years.

10.) Get rid of damaged or unused items

Don’t waste space storing holiday decorations that are damaged or that you no longer use. Throw them away or donate them to someone who can use them. A key to storing holiday decorations is knowing when it is time to let them go.

11.) Upcycle Your Decorations

Still having a hard time letting go of some of your older items? Consider upcycling them into something new. For example, old Christmas lights can be turned into a festive garland or wreath. Old glass ornaments can be glued together to make vibrant vases or wind chimes. Wooden signs can be decorated with paint and ribbon and hung anywhere in the house. Upcycling is a great way to preserve memories while also creating something entirely new.

12.) Rent a storage unit

A storage property close to home can be the best place to store holiday décor. Clean, dry, and secure – your valuable and heirloom items can be tucked away out of your house until you need them. Storage space is an affordable way to ensure your belongings are accessible when needed without cluttering your home. Save your living space by renting some additional storage space.

Holiday decorations don’t have to take up valuable space in your home if you know how to store them properly.
