Guardian Storage Strip District – A Rich History
A Changing Strip District with a Piece of Pittsburgh History
Our Strip District property is certainly one of our most interesting locations. Built in 1904, the building was originally used as a mattress wholesale warehouse. When we purchased the building over a hundred years later in 2009, we made a conscious effort to keep as many of the original architectural features as possible. The moment you step inside, the rich history is immediately obvious. From exposed brick walls to the beautiful hardwood floors, it’s like walking into a glimpse of Pittsburgh’s past. One of the most impressive features is the giant wooden beams that can be found supporting the ceilings of the building. Coming from trees that were at least 100 years old in 1904, the beams themselves likely lived through the American Revolution. If you look closely, you can find other historic fixtures, like the original safe (with the ‘Pittsburg’ spelling), custom windows, and giant metal doors.
These days, the Strip District location doesn’t just hold the memories of the building, it also holds precious memories for each tenant who chooses to store their belongings at Guardian Storage. Through its nine years as a storage facility, the building has seen such valuable treasures as a genuine, ancient Egyptian sarcophagus, the world’s largest bottle cap collection, and Pittsburgh’s own Light Up Night tree. Families, companies, and nonprofits all trust Guardian with these precious belongings because we care for them as if they were our own. Our managers take pride in caring for our customers by doing everything possible to make the storing with us as secure and seamless as possible.
Even as we work to preserve the building’s history, we celebrate the growth and development happening in the Strip District and surrounding neighborhoods. If you’ve visited the area in the past year, you have likely seen all the new businesses and housing springing up. The area continues to grow, bringing exciting new restaurants and shops and numerous tech companies, giving it the nickname “Robotics Row.” We will continue to preserve our building’s historic charm, but like the Strip District, we will continue to evolve our business to meet our customers’ needs, including the services and amenities that make us Pittsburgh’s premier storage choice.
