Frequently Asked Questions

Guardian Storage wants you to know how storage works so you can have an outstanding self storage experience. Here are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

How does the rental process work?

  1. Search for the right Guardian Storage location: Click here to find the Guardian Storage that’s most convenient for you – near your home, work or in between.
  2. Select the size storage unit you need: If you’re not sure how big a unit to reserve, use our online estimator or call your local Guardian Storage and speak directly to a Certified Storage Consultant who will take an inventory of your items and recommend the correct size.
  3. It’s time to store! On the day of your move-in you can complete your rental paperwork in our leasing main office, move your stuff into your unit and put a lock on the door.

Can I rent in person or on the telephone?

We designed our website to make renting storage fast and easy online – but you’re also welcome to walk into any Guardian Storage and rent in person. Or you can call us toll free at 1-888-373-7368 to ask questions or reserve by telephone.

What self storage sizes are available?

Our standard sizes range from 5’x5′ to 10’x30′ and are approximately 10’ high (all dimensions are approximate), but some properties also offer smaller and larger spaces, from storage lockers to extra-large units. From storing one room of furniture to storing your whole house, use our Size Guide to find the right amount of space for you.

What’s the difference between an indoor unit and an outdoor unit?

Indoor units are protected from the elements and have broad hallways (and elevators in multi-story properties). Outdoor units are usually all on one level and frequently offer the convenience of drive-up access. Guardian Storage properties offer both types of units.

Do you have climate controlled units?

Yes. Climate controlled units are designed to maintain a set temperature range of approximately 55-80 degrees using A/C and heat. In addition, humidity is maintained in a range to help preserve the integrity of your belongings. Climate controlled units are available at all Guardian Storage properties.

What is a drive-up unit?

A drive-up unit has a roll-up door and its own loading area. Just drive up to it and load your belongings in or out.

What’s a roll-up door?

Roll-up doors are like garage doors – they roll up overhead for easy access. They’re usually wider than swing doors, so it’s easy to move things in and out.

Do you offer RV/boat/car/motorcycle parking?

While most of our units are designed to store personal or business belongings, some of our properties offer spaces for parking vehicles or vessels. Please check with your neighborhood Guardian Storage to see if this feature is available.

Does Guardian Storage provide locks? Do you keep a key to my self storage unit?

You can purchase a new, sealed lock at any Guardian Storage. No one else has a key to that lock – just you. If you prefer to provide your own lock, you’re welcome to do so. (Note: Some Guardian Storage properties have special doors that require specific locks. These locks are available for purchase at those properties.) If you choose to have deliveries sent directly to your storage space we are happy to keep a copy of your key in our office to allow for delivery directly to your storage unit.

Do you have trucks available to rent for moving?

Yes. We offer free moving truck for all new move-ins. There is only a charge for insurance and gas, which may be paid for by credit or debit card. Our moving truck is also available to rent by our tenants at anytime. Be sure to bring a valid drivers license and proof of insurance.

Do you have handcarts or dollies I can use at your properties?

Yes. You’re welcome to use our complimentary carts and dollies while you’re at Guardian Storage. When you are done using please place all carts and dollies in their designated areas by main entries to the building.

Do you have elevators?

Yes. If there is no direct exterior access to your floor there are large elevators available for use.

When can I access my self storage unit?

Most Guardian Storage properties are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, but access hours may vary by location. Select a location for hours and features.

What’s the difference between access hours and office hours?

During access hours, you can use your gate code to access your storage unit. During office hours, your Certified Storage Consultant is available to provide in-person customer service (like answering questions, selling supplies, accepting rental payment, etc).

Will my stuff be safe?

Very safe. Here’s what we do to ensure the security of our buildings (varies by location):

  • State-of-the-art digital video surveillance systems
  • Individually-alarmed units
  • Motion detectors
  • Electronic keypad access to gated property
  • Central station monitoring
  • On-site managers at every property
  • Full-time maintenance staff to keep everything clean and well maintained

If I rent a storage unit from you, can my spouse, kids or friend have access, too?

When you rent from Guardian Storage you can allow access for other people you specify (or restrict access only to yourself). Simply designate an access code for them and the desired person will be granted access.

If I forget my access code, what do I do?

Call your Guardian Storage Property Manager for assistance during regular business hours.

Do you rent space month-to-month, or do I have to sign a long-term lease?

Our rental contracts are month-to-month agreements – no long-term lease is required.

What kind of documentation do I need to provide to rent a storage unit?

You will need to provide a valid, government-issued form of identification (e.g., driver’s license, state ID, or passport).

How do I move out?

The move-out process is easy: empty your storage unit and let us know that you’re leaving. We’ll close out your account that day. As a courtesy, we ask that you give notice at least 10 days before your intended vacate date.

Do you require insurance on my stored goods?

You are responsible for the items you store with us at Guardian Storage, and insurance for your stored belongings is required. As a service to our customers, we offer the Guardian Protection Plan, which requires no deductible and is available in various levels of coverage at all Guardian Storage locations. Even if you have coverage for stored items through a homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, the deductible is likely to be hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars. This is why we recommend protecting your items through the Guardian Protection Plan.

Do you have automatic payment options?

Sure do. You can sign up for autopay with our managers at move-in or any time during your stay. We’ll automatically deduct your monthly charges from a credit card, debit card, or bank account. No bills, no checks to mail, no late fees. If you don’t want your rental fee to be paid automatically you can make a one-time monthly payment using our convenient online billing and payment option.

I don’t want to pay online. Can I pay in person?

Yes. You can choose to pay in-person at the property with cash, check, or credit/debit card.

What if I’m late in making my payment?

We bill monthly and all payments are due on the 1st of the month. To avoid the possibility of late fees, we recommend customers sign up for autopay, so that their payments are automatically taken from a bank account or credit card each month.

If I don’t rent storage, can I still purchase moving and packing supplies?

Yes – anyone can buy our high-quality moving and supplies at any of our properties. We’ll even buy back unused boxes at our properties, so don’t be afraid to stock up.

Do you hold auctions?

We hold monthly storage auctions as needed.
They are held online at https://storageauctions.com/
