It’s time to stop crawling and tripping over tools, toys, and outdoor equipment in your shed when looking for what you need. Shed organization can be done in as little as a day and can save you time and stress. When it comes to shed organization ideas, there are a lot of routes you can take. Before you even begin to organize your shed, you should start by getting rid of unnecessary clutter.
Things to get rid of in your shed
Paint
When exposed to extreme temperatures, the consistency of the paint will change, and it will become unusable.
Food
Food, pet food, and any food products will attract bugs and other critters like raccoons or opossums. It’s best to keep all of these items inside, where nothing can get to them.
Electronics
If you have any electronics in your shed like a Bluetooth speaker or radio, it may be best to move it inside when you are done for the day. Fluctuations in humidity and temperature can cause condensation in your electronics and may cause them to rust or malfunction.
Wooden Furniture
Heat and humidity can cause wood to warp and rot. If you have any wooden furniture or items in your shed that you do not want to become damaged, it is best to place them in a climate-controlled environment.

Doors
Utilize the space behind the doors of your shed for storage. Use hanging shoe organizers for things like gardening gloves and seeds. Or, place over-the-door hooks for extension cords, hoses, or ropes.
Magnetic Strips
If you don’t want any large storage options, magnetic strips are a great way to organize your shed without adding bulk. Place magnetic strips along the wall. Depending on the strength of the magnet, you’ll be able to hang things like nails, screwdrivers, and wrenches.
Adjustable Shelving
Adjustable shelving is a great way to take advantage of vertical space and increase organization in your shed. Larger shelves can go higher up for things like bins and seasonal items that you won’t be accessing often. Place lower shelves for things you access often. You can even line the bottoms with magnetic strips for more storage options.
Hooks
Hooks are an awesome option for things like extension cords, hoses, ropes, wreaths, and jump ropes. They take up minimal space and are a great way to get things off the floor. You can also install multiple hooks to hold heavier items like bikes or sleds.
Free-standing Shelves
If you don’t want to permanently install any shelving, free-standing shelves are the perfect solution. They can be easily built and placed inside of your shed. For further organization, assign each level of the shelf to specific items and use a label maker to indicate what goes where.
Tool Hangers
If you store tools in your shed, tool hangers are an easy way to organize your tools while keeping them on display. These hangers can be installed directly into the walls of the shed and should hold most standard tools.
Mason Jars
Utilize mason jars for smaller items like nails, screws, or seeds. Paint the lids of the mason jars with chalkboard paint for easy labeling.
Slat Wall
While a bit more expensive than some of the other shed organization options, slat walls are very effective in helping to organize your shed. Once the slat wall is installed, you will be able to customize the different storage options you want to place on the wall. You can purchase hooks, baskets, and other items to slide into the wall.
Peg Board
Pegboards are a similar solution to slat walls. You can install the board onto one of the walls of your shed. Then, you’ll be able to customize the different organizational elements on your board.
Pallets
Upcycle an old pallet into a shed storage solution. Place the pallet upright against the wall of your shed. Once upright, you can place brooms, shovels, skis, pool noodles, etc into the pallet for easy storage.
Every shed is different, so choose the shed organization ideas that best fit your situation. If your shed is still too cramped after taking the time to organize, it may be time to look into getting a storage unit. It can be a great temporary solution for storing seasonal items and other things you don’t use often but are not ready to get rid of.
